Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to review and use recognised conservation principles and practice to remove heritage leadlight and stained glass, and update condition reports on removed panels, including estimation of costs for required work.This unit applies to individuals working with designed glass.Licensing, legislative or certification requirements may apply to this unit and relevant state/territory and local government agencies should be consulted to determine any necessary certification or licensing for undertaking glass and glazing work. Access to construction sites requires certification of general induction training specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan removal processes
  • Identify and follow work health and safety, legislative and organisational requirements
  • Establish, confirm and clarify purpose and required outcome of the removal with appropriate personnel
  • Determine location of the leadlight and stained glass panels to be removed and inspect for information relevant to the process
  • Review condition report and identify required removal sequence
  • Develop a removal work plan with approval of relevant people
       
Element: Prepare for removal
  • Assemble, position tools and equipment and check prior to use to ensure they are appropriate for the removal, serviceable and in a safe condition
  • Prepare and position supporting frames and storage materials
  • Assemble and position plans and other documents to allow for confirmation of the panel structure and placement
  • Take photographs of the panel before, during and after removal
       
Element: Remove the panel
  • Secure supporting frames to the panel using established techniques
  • Remove and store panel structural supports in ways that protect the item
  • Identify structural panel damage and accurately document
  • Remove and place panel in the storage area or crated for transport
       
Element: Finalise and report on the removal
  • Inspect removed panel for damage of all types
  • Remove, clean and store tools and equipment appropriately
  • Clean removal area and dispose of rubbish appropriately
  • Prepare and provide condition report that includes detailed photographic evidence with details of issues and recommendations regarding remedial work
  • Develop a work plan and cost estimate for all required further conservation work

Assessment Tasks
